May 12 is the International Women in Mathematics Day, which has been celebrated since 2019. The day is in honour of Maryam Mirzakhani, born 12 May 1977, the first woman to win the Fields Medal.
May 12 is a joyful opportunity for the mathematical community to celebrate women in mathematics. The goal of the day is to inspire women everywhere to celebrate their achievements in mathematics, and to encourage an open, welcoming and inclusive work environment for everybody. The May12 initiative brings together local or virtual events celebrating women in mathematics which take place in the period May 1 to June 15. Events can range from workshop, conference, lecture, panel discussion, movie screening, etc.
This initiative is supported by several organisations for women in mathematics including Indian Women and Mathematics (IWM). Since 2019, several events have taken place in India under this initiative. IWM would like to encourage you to organize an event during May 1 to June 15. Do register your event on the website of May 12 initiative https://may12.womeninmaths.org/.
In case you have any queries, please feel free to contact Dr. Paramita Das (paramita.isi@gmail.com), IWM representative in the coordination group of the May 12 initiative.
